Reader Remarks on:

Discussion on CardioExchange: Are We Ready to Stop Treating Cholesterol Levels and Start Treating Risk?

treat also to likely benefit

An 89 year old patient of mine with type II diabetes saw a cardiologist for pre-operative clearance for a minor eye procedure. My patient never had a cardiovascular "event." I was chastised for not having him on a statin and told I should treat him to a target LDL of 70. I thought this was patently ridiculous and thought it was obvious that he did not have the life expectancy to benefit from a statin. The cardiologist treated me like a cretin. The AHA should address this issue in its guidelines.

We cannot always attack the risk factor so we have to content with the false endpoint which is cholesterol.
