Harlan M. Krumholz, MD, SM, Editor-in-Chief
Harlan M. Krumholz, MD, SM, is the Harold H. Hines, Jr., Professor of Medicine in the Section of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine. He serves as Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program and Director of the Yale-New Haven Hospital Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE). Dr. Krumholz has done extensive epidemiologic research to identify strategies for improving the quality of cardiovascular health care, with particular emphasis on the treatment of heart failure in the elderly. Using methods of clinical epidemiology and health services research, he has sought to illuminate the balance of risks, benefits, and costs of specific clinical approaches. He has been writing for Journal Watch Cardiology since the publication's launch in 1995 and has been Editor-in-Chief since 2000.
Howard C. Herrmann, MD, Deputy Editor
Howard C. Herrmann, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Interventional Cardiology and Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. Dr. Herrmann's research interests include the study of new devices and therapies for valvular and coronary artery disease, with particular interest in platelet inhibitors, acute myocardial infarction, and percutaneous treatment of valvular heart disease. In addition to being an active practicing cardiologist, he has been an investigator on many important clinical trials, including SPEED, TACTICS, TARGET, EVEREST, and FINESSE. He also is editor of Percutaneous Noncoronary Intervention, a book that highlights new techniques for treating structural and valvular heart disease. Dr. Herrmann is a former president of the Pennsylvania chapter of the American College of Cardiology. He has been writing for Journal Watch Cardiology since the publication's launch in 1995 and has been Deputy Editor since 2006.
JoAnne M. Foody, MD, Associate Editor
JoAnne M. Foody, MD, is Director of the Cardiovascular Wellness Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Dr. Foody has an active role in inpatient care and mentors residents and fellows, with emphasis on strengthening cardiac disease prevention and rehabilitation. Her research has focused on identifying and fostering greater use of clinical strategies that prevent adverse cardiovascular events in people with and without coronary artery disease. Dr. Foody also has had leadership roles on the National AMI and National Heart Failure projects of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. She has been writing for Journal Watch Cardiology since 2000.
Joel M. Gore, MD, Associate Editor
Joel M. Gore, MD, is the Edward Budnitz Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester. Chosen in 1992 as the second faculty member to serve in this endowed position, Dr. Gore is also a practicing cardiologist with interests in clinical cardiology, particularly prevention and acute coronary syndromes. He has been a principal investigator on the Worcester Heart Attack Study and co-chair of the scientific advisory committee for the GRACE study. Dr. Gore has been writing for Journal Watch Cardiology since 2000.
Mark S. Link, MD, Associate Editor
Mark S. Link, MD, is Associate Professor of Medicine at New England Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. A practicing cardiac electrophysiologist, his clinical interests are ablation procedures and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, and his active research projects focus on sudden cardiac death in athletes, commotio cordis, long-term follow-up of patients with ICDs, and the influence of air pollution on sudden cardiac death and arrhythmias. Dr. Link is currently a member of the editorial boards of EP Lab Digest, Heart Rhythm, and the Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, and he serves on the American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support Committee.
Frederick A. Masoudi, MD, MSPH, Associate Editor
Frederick A. Masoudi, MD, MSPH, is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the Denver Health and Health Sciences Center, where his teaching actively involves medical residents and fellows, emphasizing evidence-based practice. A practicing clinical cardiologist at Denver Health Medical Center in Colorado, Dr. Masoudi has also served as the clinical coordinator for initiatives sponsored by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to measure and improve the quality of care for Medicare beneficiaries with cardiovascular disease. His research focuses on the relationship between medical care and health outcomes in patients with cardiovascular disease, especially older persons and patients with heart failure. He has been writing for Journal Watch Cardiology since 2005.
Beat J. Meyer, MD, Associate Editor
Beat J. Meyer, MD, is Associate Professor of Cardiology at the University of Bern and Chief of the Division of Cardiology at the Lindenhofspital in Bern, Switzerland. He has been a principal investigator on numerous European and international studies in cardiology published in the Lancet, Circulation, European Heart Journal, and other medical journals. His research emphasizes platelet function in acute coronary syndromes and the mechanism of coronary thrombosis. Dr. Meyer has been writing for Journal Watch Cardiology since 1999.
William T. Abraham, MD, Contributing Editor
William T. Abraham, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at The Ohio State University Heart Center in Columbus. He has conducted extensive clinical research in heart failure, including studies of neurohormonal mechanisms, systemic and cardiac adrenergic activity, and the role of the kidney. Dr. Abraham has been an investigator on more than 100 clinical drug and device trials in heart failure and cardiac transplantation, including MIRACLE, ENCOR, VMAC, and ESCAPE. He also serves as Associate Director for Clinical and Translational Research at the Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute. Dr. Abraham has been writing for Journal Watch Cardiology since 2000.
Hugh Calkins, MD, Contributing Editor
Hugh Calkins, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Director of Electrophysiology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Calkins heads the Arrhythmia Service, the Clinical Electrophysiology Laboratory, and the Right Ventricular Dysplasia Program. He has clinical and research interests in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias with catheter ablation, the role of device therapy for treating ventricular arrhythmias, the evaluation and management of syncope, and the study of arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia. Dr. Calkins has been writing for Journal Watch Cardiology since the publication's launch in 1995.
